Shortly after the Netherlands capitulates to the Nazis, Casper “Papa” ten Boom, a seventy-year old watchmaker, reads that all Jews must wear yellow stars. Even though he is a Christian, Papa leaves his fifty-year-old daughter Betsie running the store to acquire a star. Meanwhile, Corrie ten Boom, Betsie’s sister, leads her class of mentally handicapped children through the streets and witnesses boys smashing up a china shop owned by a man who criticized the Nazis. A soldier exclaims that once order is restored, the Aryan races can live as brothers, but Corrie states that men can only live as brothers in the kingdom of God. Days later, Pastor De Ruiter arrives at the shop to get his watch cleaned and to convince Papa to stop wearing the yellow star. After Papa goes upstairs, a Jewish doctor arrives carrying a baby.
