Intern Season Is Upon Us!Walked into our South Bay Office Lobby yesterday and discovered the kick-off meeting for CBRE's GLA / OC summer interns was happening.I instantly recognized the look on their faces. It caused me to flash back about a decade ago when I sat in that same meeting. Intimidated, nervous, and excited.Didn't know squat.Owned 3 dress shirts (mid week laundry / ironing was a ritual).Had no idea what to expect or how to seize the opportunity. I got lucky. Upon arriving in my designated office (Newport Beach), I was introduced to my assigned mentor Kristina Metzger. She quickly realized how clueless I was and gave me a stern pep-talk. By the end of that afternoon we'd established clear goals for the internship and my "hit-list" of every CBRE professional that I would meet and network with during my 2 months. That, (and a ton of other people that helped me), laid the ground work for my future employment.Top 5 Things I'd Share With Any Summer Intern In CRE:1) You don't know that much - and that's 100% okay! Be a sponge.2) Your foot is in the door. Seize this by setting "educational meetings".3) Your interest in CRE / asking thoughtful ?'s are your assets right now.4) Get tight with your fellow interns. They are future partners / clients. 5) The handwritten thank you note remains undefeated in standing out.Best of luck kids! Photo: CBRE Summer Internship 2012 - Shot On Original I Phone. 😂

That’s a wrap, folks! I am sad to share that my summer internship at Publicis Groupe is coming to an end this week. What an incredible 10 weeks it’s been! I can honestly say that I stepped into this role with no expectations. I’ve always wanted to experience life at an ad agency and am thankful that Fallon was my first. In the spirit of paying it forward, if you are someone that is considering an internship at Fallon, here are a few things you CAN expect. 1.Expect to be welcomed into a small cohort of other interns led by two dedicated people. These people are your “go-to”. They are there to receive your feedback, check in with you weekly, encourage you to learn and grow daily, and talk to you about any cultural events that have the wheels in your brain spinning (like Barbenheimer 😉) Thank you Kerry Gay and Cynthia Saad for being these people for us this summer.2.Expect to be mentored by not one, but two, talented individuals. These people will help you sharpen your technical skills and talk with you in length about your role, the industry, and any universal thoughts you may have. Thank you Emma Johnsen (Pindell) and Tiffany Luong for being these people for me – I’ll take all our conversations with me into my next endeavor and beyond.3.Expect to work on real client projects. You will be included in meetings, asked for your thoughts/opinions/ideas, and will have input on things that are put in front of clients.4.Expect to connect with and learn from exceptional professionals. People at Fallon want to get to know the interns. Whether you work directly with someone or not, they will gladly make time for you.5.If you’re lucky, expect to make friends with the interns working with you. I was lucky enough to meet and work with talented peers who encouraged me and made me laugh along the way. *If you’re hiring, I’d highly recommend them: Bri Lucero (art direction & design), Gillian Rooney (media), Anthony Saucedo (social Strat.), Jenn Valerio (creative & production), Erin Dorney (art direction), Selena Souvannasane (production), Mia Forouhari (accounts).Being a fly on the wall is simply impossible at Fallon…a caterpillar, maybe. But hey, at least afterward you’re destined to be a butterfly.

I’ve talked to a few seniors recently about the transition from student life to the ‘real world’ and I think it’s important for employers to remember that there’s a huge emotional - and often physical - transition process that students go through when they close their course books for the final time.Obviously, there’s the economic issue of ensuring that you have money coming in to pay the bills. But there’s also the personal component of being ripped from a large group of friends, often being dumped into a new city or location, and having to come up to speed with a new day-to-day reality. And yet employers still expect new starters to hit the ground running. That’s despite the fact that even the most seasoned new employee takes 180 days or so to come up to ‘full productivity’. So imagine what it’s like for a student in their first job. It’s little surprise that outstanding students like Arden Jordan would describe the transition as bittersweet. There’s certainly excitement at the start of life in ‘the real world’ but there’s genuine apprehension too. That’s why we created the Boldsquare residency, to take away some of that mystique of the workplace, and not just provide marketing skills to students but also give them a sense of what it will be like to work in an agency environment. The Boldsquare residents will still need to make the adjustment from campus to workplace, but hopefully the shift is faster and more effective. That’s good for employers, and it’s good for new graduates too.

refLEXtion: Internships at Sam's Club Over 25 years ago, I lived off of Kellogg Company’s Corn Pops. Truly emulating the mantra, “Gotta Have My Pops,” I applied for an internship at Kellogg’s, while feasting off of cereal at the University of Michigan. I envisioned a world where I quite literally popped through the “O” in “pOp’s”. While I didn’t receive an internship at Kellogg Company, my passion for brands + writing did make its’ way to Hearst Magazines. And, in the late ‘90’s, I accepted an internship as a Merchandise Editorial Intern at Marie Claire Magazine. As a Merchandise Editorial Intern, I learned how accessories accompany apparel. However, amidst this world of shoes, jewels, and belts; I continued to wonder where the “Pops” exist. How did advertising get into the magazine?Thankfully, I embarked on a relationship with Amanda Ross who explained the world of publishing to me. I learned about full bleed printing, the 2nd-4th cover, frequency, circulation and more. And thus, I pivoted from editorial to publishing because…I gotta have my Pops. Internships can help you learn about an industry. Internships can help you learn about yourself.Internships can lead to exciting career opportunities. So, for any college student who wants to chart a new path for themselves; please consider Sam’s Club Member Access Platform (MAP).
