Abstract
Amal was a high school girl in Southern California when she first encountered anti-Muslim sentiment. Friends tried to convert her, telling her she would burn in hell if she refused to convert to Christianity, and school administrators set aside her election as student body president because she was Muslim. Amal refused to strike back, taking the high ground and showing remarkable forbearance, especially for someone so young. Her experience withstanding religious bullying strengthened her, providing her with the fortitude and judgment to survive the 2004 tsunami, one of the largest natural disasters in recorded history. Killing at least 225,000 people across a dozen countries, the tsunami caught Amal underwater in Thailand. It destroyed Amal’s hotel and left her – literally – without the clothes on her back, only a swimming suit. Seeing then how people worked together to help each other, Amal took all these experiences and dedicated her life to helping people in need. Amal’s story reveals the strength in refusing to retaliate and conveys how even small acts of moral courage shape character and change people, opening them to new possibilities.
